AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, DoD to Explore Spectrum Sharing

AT&T today announced via its public policy blog that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with T-Mobile USA, Verizon Wireless, and the Department of Defense to explore the idea of sharing spectrum. The agreement follows recommendations made by the NTIA last year that the option be used as an alternative to new spectrum auctions. The companies will test sharing a 95MHz slice of airwaves between 1755MHz and 1850MHz, which is currently used by the DoD. The testing will be carried out over the next couple of months, and is expected to be completed by the end of March. The tests will include monitoring, sharing, and simulations at five locations specified by the DoD to see if DoD activities are harmed or disrupted by nearby base station activity. The results will be shared by the Commerce Spectrum Management Advisory Committee when ready.

AT&T is pleased to have recently joined into an MOU with our fellow carriers, Verizon and T-Mobile, and the U.S. Department of Defense to test the viability of sharing 95 MHz of spectrum that is currently used by DoD and other federal agencies.  This spectrum is located in the 1755 to 1850 MHz spectrum band, which NTIA has analyzed in great detail for potential clearing and sharing opportunities.

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony confirms its My Xperia smartphone recovery service, starts limited trials

Sony piqued its fair share of interest when it trademarked the My Xperia name for an online service -- what could it do in the cloud that it hadn't already done? Tracking lost devices, it seems. The now-official My Xperia service trial gives Sony phone owners the equivalent to a recovery tool like Find My iPhone or the early form of HTCSense.com, letting them pinpoint a missing Xperia and ping it, lock it down or wipe at least some of its data. Be ready for a very gradual launch, however. The very first wave of tests involves just Xperia acro S users in Nordic countries, and the trial will expand only to 2012 smartphones in the region that are still running Android 4.0. Those of us further abroad will have to wait for the eventual worldwide expansion if we want to easily find that Xperia S buried between the couch seats.

Why the Z10 and Q10 will not save BlackBerry

For Discount Cell Phones, Cell Phones Online AND Refurbished cell phones, Come visit our Online Store for discount prices at www.mylancellular.com
BlackBerry Q10 and Z10
Two words: false prophets.
BlackBerry is betting its future on the Z10 and its new OS, but they won't be enough to prevent the company's inevitable demise
By every standard, the BlackBerry Z10 is the best smartphone that BlackBerry (formerly RIM) has ever produced. It's a massive upgrade in terms of design, user experience and technology. I welcome the departure of the home button in favor of gestures. So let me first give credit where credit is due: BlackBerry has built a decent phone. The Q10 isn't bad either, if you're a die-hard fan of QWERTY keyboards.
Building decent hardware isn't what matters most about a smartphone, though. And for those of you who think software is the most important component of a smartphone, you're also wrong.

Take a tour of BlackBerry 10 OS (pictures)

1-2 of 17
Scroll LeftScroll Right
What makes or breaks a smartphone are the apps. And in that area, BlackBerry is still sorely lacking. That's not to say BlackBerry hasn't done everything short of delivering the moon to attract developers -- they have. BlackBerry claims 70,000 apps, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, Rdio and Rovio's Angry Birds (soon).
That's still just 8.75% of Apple's massive iOS app library, though (800,000). Android has just as many apps. Even Microsoft has north of 150,000 and has shown a willingness to spend the money necessary to get app developers on board.
So let's do a headcount of the apps that are missing from BlackBerry: Camera+, Google Maps (BlackBerry's default offering sucks), Pandora, Netflix, YouTube, Hulu, Spotify, Instagram and Snapchat.
Of that group, Instagram and Snapchat are the most important. Why? Because they're the ones that appeal most to the younger generation of smartphone users. Just follow your 10-year-old cousin on Instagram and you'll quickly realize that this is the way she communicates.
But that's not even the biggest problem, because BlackBerry will eventually get Instagram. The issue is this: when a new application sweeps the teenage market (Snapchat, Tinder, etc.), it will always come from iOS and Android, because that's where all apps begin. Out of those 70,000 apps BlackBerry is boasting, how many of them are exclusive? That number will never be very high, and that matters more than anything else.

For BlackBerry to survive, it needs to find a way to grow. It can't simply retain its existing subscriber base and expect to stick around as a company, because it doesn't have the resources or scale to fend off an eventual acquisition. And I tend to agree with S&P Capital IQ analyst James Moorman's assessment of the BlackBerry 10: "We believe the new devices will do more to retain existing Blackberry subscribers than to lure new subscribers."
BlackBerry fans are going to savage me for this column, but here's what I want you to do before you start screaming at me in the comments: find a group of 10-year-olds (a dozen is fine) and ask them, "If I had an iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry to give you, which phone would you want?"
And that, my friends, is why the Z10 and Q10 will not save BlackBerry.

The popular smartphone became available again in Germany earlier today, and it will now ship from the U.S. Google Play store to buyers in one to two weeks. Google also added Canada to the lineup.
The Nexus 4 is now back in stock in the U.S. Google Play store.
Germany isn't the only country getting more Nexus 4 inventory today. The popular Google smartphone is now available in the U.S. and Canadian Google Play stores, as well.

The device, which costs $299 for the 8GB version or $349 for the 16GB model, will ship in one to two weeks for U.S. buyers, the site says. That's a big improvement from the recent wait times, as well as the general unavailability of the device. The phone earlier today also became available again in Germany, and it hit Canada shortly after arriving in the U.S. Google Play store.
The LG Nexus 4 has been selling out pretty rapidly since its November launch, with users forced to wait many weeks for the device to ship or to even show availability online. The smartphone is one developed closely with Google, giving a pure and polished experience with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, as CNET reviewers have noted. However, it also lacks 4G LTE capabilities, though that doesn't appear to be hurting demand for the device.
The Nexus 4 sold out in less than half an hour the day it was released in mid-November.
A Google executive last month blamed LG for the shortage, saying supplies from the company have been "scarce and erratic." The company at the time vowed to improve the situation and said it should have good news to share shortly.

Nokia has committed another $250 million to its venture funding firm Nokia Growth Partners (NGP), and expanded its activities into China.
NGP was set up in 2005 to boost the mobile ecosystem around the world and will use the third round of funding from its parent company to invest in mobile companies in the US, Europe and Asia .
Nokia executive vice president and chief financial officer Timo Ihamuotila said the latest funding “reinforces Nokia’s support for a vibrant mobile ecosystem and our determination to collaborate with industry innovators to build great mobile products”.
The firm appointed David Tang as managing director of the Chinese arm of its business with Lu Guo as principal.
Tang has advised several Chinese mobile businesses and has worked with NGP when he was vice chairman of Nokia China. He joins from AMD. Lu Guo joins from Keytone Ventures where he was responsible for mobile internet investments.
NGP managing partner John Gardner said the firm sets itself apart from pure financial investors due to the “partnerships and insights our invested companies get from their close association with Nokia”.
In the past year, NGP has overseen the IPOs of image processing software maker Morpho and Inside Secure, which produces technology for secure transactions and digital identity.
There have also been sales of text input company Swype, IT hosting provider Netmagic and integrated circuit maker Summit Microelectronics, which was acquired by Qualcomm.

Office 2013 to debut tomorrow

For Discount cell phones and New and Used Tablets as well as cell phone accessories,Come visit our online store for savings up to 25% at www.mylancellular.com Finally, an official confirmation. Microsoft is launching the new Office, aka Office 2013, on January 29. It's finally official. Microsoft is launching the new Office, aka Office 2013, on January 29. There have been lots of rumors that January 29 would be the day that the latest version of Office would be generally available via retail channels. But thanks to a tweet from the Office team, and a #Timeto365 campaign/hashtag -- which I saw via Winbeta.org -- we now know Microsoft is "launching" the new Office on Tuesday in Bryant Park in New York City. Microsoft released Office 2013 to manufacturing on October 11, 2012. The company made the final bits available to MSDN and TechNet subscribers, as well as volume-licensing customers, before the end of last year. Recently, Microsoft made $10 versions of the final Office 2013 bits available to volume licensees with Software Assurance as part of its Home Use Program. Microsoft officials have been saying for a couple of months that Redmond planned to make the final bits commercially available in the first calendar quarter of 2013. The company already has taken the wraps off some of its Office 2013 SKUs. The company will be pushing a new, subscription-centric version of Office that it (confusingly) has named Office 365 Home Premium. I say confusingly because, unlike the other Office 365 SKUs, the Home Premium version isn't a Microsoft-hosted version of Office. Instead, it's downloadable, locally installable versions of the Office 2013 products for which users will be charged a monthly or annual "rental" fee. For that subscription fee, users will have the right to install Office 2013 and/or the Office for Mac 2011 SKUs on up to five PCs and Macs in total. (There's still no new word on what's going on with the follow-on version of Office for Mac 2011.) Microsoft officials also have said that the "real" Office 365 update should be available around the time of the client launch. Microsoft officials have been prepping the company's reseller/integrator partners for the Office 365 refresh for the past couple of weeks. When asked in December 2012 for the status of the rollout of the new Office, I was told a company spokesperson: "Any of the new Office 365 SKUs don't become available for purchase until first quarter of 2013. " That said, some Office 365 Enterprise customers have been able to get the latest bits as part of Microsoft's regular service updates, starting in October 2012 and continuing through general availability, the spokesperson added. LTE™ coverage for Xperia™ smartphones

For Discount Cell Phones, Cell Phones Online AND Refurbished cell phones, Come visit our Online Store for discount prices at http://www.mylancellular.com

LTE networks are getting more and more common, allowing you to browse the web instantly, stream content, or download movies at high-speed. You’ll find LTE support in a number of Xperia™ smartphones, all the way from the just announced Xperia™ Z to the Xperia™ ion. Each device has a particular range of LTE bands, with corresponding regions that support the service. Read on to get the full list of LTE-enabled smartphones, supported bands, and the available countries where you can use LTE.
Among the impressive specs you’ll find for the recently announced Xperia Z – quad-core CPU, 5’ 1080p HD display, and HDR video camera – don’t forget that you’ll also find support for LTE. It’s the latest Sony superphone with LTE capability, and joins an already extensive list of Xperia™ LTE-capable smartphones.
LTE stands for 3GPP Long Term Evolution, and is a standard for wireless data communications technology and an evolution of the GSM/UMTS standards. This technology increases the capacity and speed of wireless data networks using DSP (digital signal processing) techniques and modulations that already provides peak rates of 100 Mbit/s downlink and 50 Mbit/s uplink and QoS provisions permitting a transfer latency of 10-15 ms and is evolving to beyond 300 Mbps. With LTE, the ability to manage fast-moving mobiles is supported, as well as multi-cast and broadcast streams. LTE supports scalable carrier bandwidths, from 1.4 MHz to 20 MHz and supports both frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time-division duplexing (TDD).
LTE frequency bands
The LTE standard can be used with many different frequency bands. The deployment is increasing rapidly among the world. As of today 700, 850, , 1900 and 1700/2100 MHz bands are used in North America. South America uses 700, 1700/2100 and 2600 MHz. 800, 900, 1800, 2600 MHz bands are used in Europe. You’ll find the 850, 1500, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2600 MHz bands used in Asia. And Australia uses 1800 MHz. As a result, phones from one country may not work in other countries. Since the LTE standard is fairly new to the operators there are very few roaming agreements between different countries and operators when it comes to LTE roaming (HSPA roaming already exists). In the future when roaming agreements are in place users will need a multi-band capable phone for roaming internationally. That will be less of an issue if you’re using an Xperia™ smartphone, as they are already multi-band capable (with the exception of Xperia™ SX) and support at least two bands or more. The table further down lists the LTE bands supported by Xperia™ smartphones.
The feature image used for this article indicates current countries in green where there is an existing (commercial) LTE network that Xperia™ smartphones can connect to. Please note that many more regions will have LTE in the near future. Furthermore, the availability of LTE networks is operator-dependent and may vary from area to area within a country.
List of LTE supported Xperia smartphones
The Xperia™ smartphones that support LTE include:
Xperia ion (LT28i)
Xperia TL (LT30at)
Xperia T (LTE30a)
Xperia V (LT25i)
Xperia SX (SO-0SD)
Xperia AX (SO-01E)
Xperia Z (C6603)
Xperia ZL (LTE C6503, C6506)
The following table further specifies the supported bands, available regions and other technical information.

Navigating with Nokia Drive+ Beta on the HTC 8X (screenshot gallery

Summary: Last year Microsoft and Nokia stated that they would bring turn-by-turn voice navigation, powered by Nokia, to all WP8 devices and yesterday that promise came true. This screenshot gallery shows how Nokia Drive+ Beta works on the HTC 8X.

Nokia Drive+ Beta now available for other WP8 devices

Yesterday Mary Jo posted the news about the release of Nokia Drive+ Beta for WP8 users in the US, UK, and Canada. Nokia and Microsoft stated last year that Nokia Drive would be offered to all WP8 partners and now we are finally seeing its availability.
Nokia Drive was a feature that made Nokia Lumia devices unique, but even with it rolling out to other WP8 devices I think there are still enough innovative features of the Nokia Lumia line to stand out from others. I enjoy the HTC 8X form factor, but it was a MAJOR failure to conduct a Bing Search and then not be able to navigate to a destination. When an address appears in Bing Search results, there is a line under drive that states "use an app". Prior to this Nokia Drive release tapping this on my 8X did nothing. With Windows Phone 7, Bing Maps would at least open up and start a limited turn-by-turn method that required you to physically tap on the display to make each turn.
Offline maps are supported so with this new Nokia Drive application you can navigate without a data connection. You have the option to navigate in 2D or 3D mode.

Rumored HTC M7 may finally be an HTC !!

Summary:
HTC needs to turn things around in 2013 and broad carrier rollout of a single model, similar to what Samsung and Apple have done, may go a long ways to promoting the brand. The current rumored device, the M7, may be that first device.
I think everyone can agree that HTC makes some brilliant products, but 2012 was not kind to it and it needs to turn things around or risk ending up like Palm did a few years ago. One of the things I recently suggested is broad carrier support, and the current rumor surrounding the M7 Android device is that the major US carriers will all get the device. This was the hope with the HTC One X, but that did not happen, and HTC's planned One-series campaign appeared to fall flat in the US. The M7 looks promising and may be the first step to HTC getting back in the saddle again.
If the M7 is indeed a real device, then it is highly likely we will see details announced at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February. Images that appear before then are likely the device in different prototype stages so I wouldn't put much faith into what we are seeing being the final shipping product. According to DroidDog the specs look just about perfect with a 4.7-inch 1080p display, quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 13-megapixel rear camera, and more. The 32GB storage is great as long as this is the minimum that appears on all carriers. I still wish for microSD, but if 32GB and 64GB variants are offered then I am fine with that. The Droid DNA is awesome, except for the lame 16GB integrated storage limitation that is just unacceptable for a high-end smartphone.
February should be exciting to see what HTC, Samsung, Nokia, LG, Motorola, and others have in store for the Android and Windows Phone platforms.

In today’s emerging mobile markets, budget smartphones are gaining popularity at an alarming rate. As we get closer to an age where affordable, efficient, and functional are all adjectives we use to describe phones, we have all the reason to wonder what took manufacturers so long to release them in the first place. We have seen HTC, LG, Samsung, and Sony invest resources in bringing affordable smartphones to emerging markets, so where is everyone else?
Granted, not all of these manufacturers had as many juicy rumors floating around at the time of their respective releases. In fact, we probably wouldn’t even be talking about a budget device unless it was something we actually wanted.
Now, out of the left corner, hailing from Cupertino … some would call it the fruit of their loins, others might call it the white one with Wi-Fis. But I simply call it the iPhone.
The latest manufacturer to succumb to rumors of a cheap alternative is none other than the most valuable company in the history of companies: Apple. Unfortunately for Apple, putting words like “budget” and “emerging markets” in the same sentence was not well received despite no official word of such a device even existing at the Cupertino camp.
Most recently, Phil Schiller had to calm Apple’s investors down after the Shanghai Evening News reported that Apple would develop a “cheaper” smartphone for the sake of expanding its market share. This did not sit well at all in Cupertino, or on the NYSE trading floor.
I’d have to side with Schiller and agree that the quote issued by the Chinese source was not the way to announce Apple’s Unicorn device. Though I’m a fan of the Rumor Dog’s work, I’m less than inclined to believe that any device should be announced the way it was. The quote edited by the same Chinese source reads, “We focus on making ‘the best products’ for customers and never blindly pursue market share.”
Not off to a great start then, are we lads?
Despite the rumors, we are still left with the typical interview questions like: “How will Apple be able to market a device as anything less than premium?”, “Why has it taken so long for Apple to acknowledge emerging markets and their desire for a budget alternative to Apple’s hero device?” and “What sort of features would Apple be willing to sacrifice to bring costs down and please investors, but not at the expense of marketability, or quality?”
And that’s what I’d like to talk to you about, Mr. and Mrs. Reader. What sort of features can the iPhone do without, if any at all?
Before I list the current features Apple is marketing with their latest flagship, here is the tagline on the iPhone homepage: “So much more than before. And so much less, too.” The word ‘less’ is obviously focused on the slim and svelte 7.6mm chassis that’s housing all of that fruity goodness, but in the context of this article, it’s too ironic not to mention.
On Apple's iPhone landing page, you will find the new iPhone hosts a bevy of new features, such as:
  • All new design. 18% thinner. 20% lighter. 12% less volume.
  • 4-inch Retina Display. It’s not just bigger. It’s just right.
  • Ultrafast networks. Connect to fast data networks. The world over.
  • A6 chip. Performance and graphics up to twice as fast. With battery life to spare.
  • All-new EarPods. Completely re-imagined from the sound up.
  • iSight camera. The world’s most popular camera now captures more of the world.
  • All-new Lightning connector. Smaller. Smarter. Durable. Reversible.
  • Maps. Take a turn for the better.
  • Siri. Even more of what you’re asking.
  • iOS 6. The world’s most advanced mobile operating system.
  • iCloud. Your content. On all of your devices.

The image above is a breakdown of research performed by iSuppi in the breakdown of individual components. (Click to enlarge.) And below are some of my ideas to save costs on a budget iPhone and deliver a product that won’t make investors writhe in agony:
    • Lose the 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB storage options and reduce internal storage to 4GB and 8GB to pitch iCloud.
    • Remove the matte aluminum chassis and replace it with a polycarbonate outer-shell just like its predecessors.
    • Ditch the 8MP sensor for the 5MP iSight camera in the new iPad and iPod Touch.
    • Eliminate LTE and offer separate chipsets and modems for different markets.
    • Swap the 4-inch Retina display for a 4-inch 480x800 display.
    • Reduce the length of the Lightning to USB cable.

That’s all I’d be comfortable recommending to Apple considering their brand image, business strategy, and marketing ploy. I believe costs could come down anywhere between $5-$35 per device, but obviously I don’t know anything about Apple’s current supply chain and that could be a conservative estimate. I just know they’ve managed to keep their profit margin at 68% and higher for the past two years, so I don’t think reducing it would keep anyone awake at night. In fact, people might sleep better if everyone had iPhones with Do Not Disturb at their bedside.
So, explain yourself, reader, and get comfortable, because this is no easy situation for the partially-bitten fruit company. Lets talk through it.
If you had you a say in the matter, what would you recommend Apple do with its marketing strategy for the iPhone 5’s thrifty brother? What features would you axe? Do you think Apple will stay above $500 per share if it releases a cheap iPhone, or do you think it’s game over if they do? If you don’t think Apple can get out of this situation without tarnishing its reputation, that’s understandable, but please tell me why in the comments below! Don’t forget to mention how much you think it will cost us consumers as well!
